Component-Based Servicing (CBS)

The part of Windows servicing stack responsible for managing system updates and enabling the installation, modification, and removal of system components.

Driver

A piece of software that allows the operating system to communicate with hardware components.

Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM)

A command-line tool used to service and prepare Windows images, including mounting, editing, and updating .wim files.

Hardware Compatibility List (HCL)

A list of hardware devices and systems that are tested and confirmed to be compatible with a specific operating system version.

Hyper-V

Microsoft’s virtualization platform used to create and manage virtual machines.

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)

A company that builds and sells computers with pre-installed operating systems.

Universal Serial Bus (USB)

A standard interface used to connect external devices such as keyboards, storage drives, and printers to a computer.

Trusted Platform Module (TPM)

A hardware component used to securely store cryptographic keys and ensure hardware-based security functions.

System File Checker (SFC)

A command-line utility used to scan and restore corrupted Windows system files.

Local Administrator

A user account with full system-level privileges on a local machine often used during installation and configuration.

Windows hello for buisness

A Microsoft authentication system that uses biometrics or PINs instead of passwords for secure login.

Windows Sandbox

A lightweight virtual environment that allows users to safely run untrusted applications without affecting the host system.

Windows Setup

The process that installs and configures the Windows operating system on a machine, either manually or through automation.
