What’s the theoretical yield of a chemical reaction?
The mass of a product that you expect to be produced.
What’s the conservation of mass?
Atoms are not created or destroyed.
Why is it not always possible to obtain the theoretical yield? (1)
Some of the product can be lost when it’s separated from the reaction mixture.
Why is it not always possible to obtain the theoretical yield? (2)
There can be unexpected side reactions between reactants that produce different products.
Why is it not always possible to obtain the theoretical yield? (3)
The reaction may be reversible.
What is the yield?
The amount of product that you actually get in a chemical reaction.
What is the percentage yield?
The actual yield as a proportion of the theoretical yield.
How to work out the percentage yield:
percentage yield= actual yield/ theoretical yield (x100)
