Agonist
Enhances nerve signals by mimicking a natural neurotransmitter, binding to receptors to either; trigger a strong response, increase availability, or block reuptake.
Antagonist
Blocks/reduces a neurotransmitter by binding without activating it, essentially putting a stop sign on the receiving neuron.
Inverse Agonist
Puts the brakes on neurons by binding to always slightly active receptors. Calms neural signals, resulting in decreased signalling.
Reuptake Inhibitors
Blocks neurons from sucking back up their own chemical messengers after a signal is sent.
