Brown ring test

A confirmatory test for nitrate ($NO_3$) where freshly prepared ferrous sulphate ($FeSO_4$) solution is added to a salt solution and mixed well, followed by the addition of concentrated sulphuric acid ($H_2SO_4$) through the sides of the test tube, forming a brown ring at the junction of the two liquids.
