Simple Squamous Epithelium
A single layer of flattened cells that acts as a selective barrier allowing for the diffusion and filtration of secretions.

Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Epithelial tissue composed of cube-shaped cells that functions in absorption and secretion.

Simple Columnar Epithelium
Tissue with single layer column-shaped cells that functions in absorption and secretion, secreting mostly mucus and assisting in oocyte movement through the uterine tube.

Lining of most of the gastrointestinal (digestive) tract (stomach, small intestine, large intestine), lining of the air passageways of the lung, and lining of the uterine tubes.

Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
Epithelial tissue that provides protection and promotes the movement of mucus along the lining of the respiratory tract.
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium (Locations)
Lining of the larger airways of the respiratory tract (nasal cavity, part of pharynx, parts of larynx, trachea, and bronchi), as well as lining part of the male urethra and epididymis.

Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Epithelium consisting of many layers of cells with a flat top layer, functioning to protect underlying tissue from abrasion.

Lining of the oral cavity (mouth), part of the pharynx, part of the larynx, esophagus, lining of the vagina, and anus.

Transitional Epithelium
Flexible, elastic epithelium whose cells can look cuboidal or flat; accommodates urine volume changes by distending or relaxing.

Lining of the urinary bladder, ureters, and part of the urethra.

Adipose Tissue
Anatomical term for fat tissue; functions to store energy, insulate, cushion, and protect.

Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
Durable tissue that withstands stresses applied in all directions.

Hyaline Cartilage
Cartilage tissue that provides support and forms most of the fetal skeleton.

Tip of the nose, trachea, bronchi, most of the larynx, costal cartilage of the ribs, ends of long bones, and most of the fetal skeleton.

Elastic Cartilage
Cartilage containing more fibers than hyaline cartilage; possesses the ability to stretch and recoil to maintain shape while permitting extensive flexibility.

Fibrocartilage
Least flexible cartilage with parallel collagen fibers; acts as a weight-bearing cartilage that resists compression and acts as a shock absorber.
