Research
Inquiry that relies on a variety of methods to answer questions or resolve problems.
Nursing research
Research designed to generate evidence about issues of importance to the delivery and outcomes of client care.
Consumers
Nurses who read and evaluate research reports or summaries.
Producers
Nurses who design and undertake research studies.
Paradigm
A world view; a general perspective on the complexities of the real world, with certain assumptions about reality.
Positivist paradigm
Also known as logical positivism, it is a world view that assumes reality exists and there is a real world driven by natural causes.
Constructive paradigm
Also known as naturalistic paradigm, it is a world view that assumes reality is multiple and subjective, constructed by individuals.
Quantitative research
Research associated with positivism that uses a set of orderly, disciplined procedures and deductive reasoning to gather empirical evidence.
Qualitative research
Research that emphasizes dynamic and holistic aspects of human life, typically grounded in real-life experiences and using inductive processes.
Mixed methods research
Research that involves both qualitative and quantitative data.
Empirical evidence
Evidence collected through various control strategies and systematic observation, predominantly in quantitative research.
Inductive reasoning
A process of obtaining knowledge that moves from discrete, specific concepts to holistic patterns, characteristic of the constructive paradigm.
Deductive reasoning
A process of obtaining knowledge that moves from generalizations to specific verification of hunches, characteristic of the positivist paradigm.
Generalizability
A goal of quantitative research to apply findings to broader populations beyond the specific study.
Clinical significance
A growing interest in nursing research focused on defining and ascertaining the meaningfulness of findings for clinical practice.
