Participants
847 26 year olds from New Zealand who had been studied for their mental health since childhood
Method
Correlational Study
Procedure
3 groups depending on the 5HTT gene:
1) Two short
2) One short, one long
3) Two long
Asked the participants about stressful life situations
Diagnostic criteria to evaluate depression
Results
One or two short alleles: More likely to develop depression with a stressful life event
2 long alleles: Less likely to develop depression
Findings
Environmental stress AND biological factors raise risk of depression
supports the Diathesis-Stress Model for depression
