Centralization and Decentralization

Centralization

A terminal that has no intelligence or sophistication, and relies on a central mainframe computer for programming and functionality.

Dumb terminal

The use of remote centralized data centers, such as corporate headquarters or cloud data centers, to host computing and networking resources, allowing users to perform tasks without concerns about the hardware of their devices.

Cloud computing

One of the benefits of centralization, as it allows better control over the performance and availability of applications, ensuring data is safely locked up in a centralized location.

Security

The approach of putting computing power in the user's device rather than a central data center, allowing users to operate autonomously without relying on a network.

Decentralization

Small computers, popularized by IBM in the 1980s, that enabled users to perform tasks without a central computer system, leading to the possibility of decentralization in IT.
