What is an organ system?
being composed of 2 or more organs that work together to perform complex functions
What is an organ?
Being composed of two or more tissue types that work together to perform specific functions
What is tissue
A group of cells that are similar in structure and preform a common/related function
What are the types of tissue?
Muscle, Nervous, Epithelia, Connective
What does muscle tissue do?
Assist with movement and contraction
What do nervous tissues do?
Made up of neurons that send electrical signals throughout the body
What does connective tissue do?
Helps bind, partition, protect and support the cell matrix
Where can connective tissues be found?
Under the epithelium, adipose, tendon, bone, and blood
What are the 3 types epithelial tissue and what do they do?
Simple Squamous (lung)
Flat and thing layer of cells so air passes through fast
Simple Cuboidal (kidney)
Helps with absorption of nutrients and water
Simple Columnar (intestine)
forms membranes, barriers and glands
Is polarized meaning each end can do something different
can be simple or stratified
What is simple tissue
Tissue made up of one layer of cells
What is stratified tissue?
Tissue made up of multiple layers of cells
What does the golgi apparatus do?
Provides different vessels that move proteins to make them functional
What do lysosomes do?
They degrade things that are not meant to be in the cell
What does the rough er do?
Translates mRNA to protein
What does the mitochondrion do?
Produce ATP
What do protein channels do?
They allow proteins to move through the plasma membrane
Define homeostasis
A state of relative consistency of the internal environment
What is a negative feed back loop? What are the steps?
A way for the body to return to normal. Starts from an imbalance at the set point then a receptor sense the change which alerts a control center which then responds with an effector until we return back to our normal or set point.
What is a positive feedback loop? What are the steps
A way for the body to amplify a signal in response to change. We start with a receptor sensing change which sends a signal to the control center which then sends out an effector which leads to amplification of that effector.
What is a key word that shows something is a positive feed back loop?
Words like “until”
