Roger Williams
Went to boston on 1631 as a puritan minister. his religious teachings got him banned from the colony. he then founded providence, 1636. unique because he payed natives for their land, and provided complete religous toleration
Anne Hutchinson
Questioned Puritan Authorities. Banished from the bay. founded the colony of portsmouth. She believed that faith alone, not deeds, is necessary for salvation.
Later providence and portsmouth join together to form rhode island

founded savannah, georgia. no drinking, no slavery. eventuaally, georgia became a royal colony and restrictions dropped. slowly adapted plantation system of south caroliona

triangular trade
trade between north america, west africa, and west indies. included the middle passage.
mercantalism
looked upon trade, colonies, and the accumulation of wealth as the basis for a countries military and political strength. Gov regulates trade and production to be self sufficient.
Navigation acts
implemented by england in 1650-1673. trade to and from colonies could only be done with englishs ships. all goods imported could only pass through english ports. specific goods could be exported to england only.

Metacom’s (king philip’s) war
cheif names metacom united many tribes in southern new england and attacked settlers. thousands on both sides were killed. colonial forces won, ending native american resistance in New england.
Bacon’s rebellion
rebellion against william berkely’s government, which favored large planters. Bacon raised an army of volunteers and raided indian villages, as well as burned Jamestown

uprising of pueblo people against spanish colonizers and forced christianization. only instance where natives successfully expelled a colonizing power from north America.

people agree to work for a landowner for a certain period, in exchange for room and board.
