Service Oklahoma

GDL

Graduated Driver License, a program designed to gradually phase in driving privileges for new teen drivers as they gain behind-the-wheel experience.

The Basic Speed Rule

A legal requirement that no motor vehicle shall be driven at a speed greater than is careful and prudent, and not greater than or less than is reasonable and proper for the existing conditions.

Bernardo-Mills Law

Also known as the Move Over Law, it requires drivers to move over a lane or slow down and use caution when approaching stationary vehicles with flashing lights.

TIM Scene

Traffic Incident Management scene; the area where emergency responders, law enforcement, or other personnel are actively working to manage and clear a roadway incident.

Hydroplaning

A condition where tires lose contact with the road surface and ride on a film of water, which reduces traction and increases stopping distance.

Three-second Rule

A method to determine safe following distance by selecting a fixed object and ensuring at least $3\,seconds$ pass after the lead car clears it before your vehicle reaches the same point.

Oklahoma Implied Consent Law

A law stating that any person who operates a motor vehicle in the state has already agreed to take one or more BAC tests to determine blood alcohol content.

Zero Tolerance Law

A law making it unlawful for any person under $21$ years of age to drive with any measurable quantity of alcohol in their blood or breath at the time of a test.

Mandatory Point System

A method by which Service Oklahoma monitors driving records; accumulating $10$ or more points within $5$ years results in a license suspension.

Compulsory Liability Insurance

Road Rage

Aggressive and hazardous driving behavior that includes tailgating, cutting off other vehicles, speeding, or running red lights due to a driver's anger.

Primary Identification

Original or certified documents required to apply for a license, such as a certified U.S. Birth Certificate, an unexpired U.S. Passport, or a Naturalization Certificate.

Secondary Crash

Any crash that occurs because of another crash or incident, often caused by drivers being distracted by the initial scene.
