What are the two systems of measurement?
Imperial and metric
Between the imperial and metric system, which is more commonly used around the world?
Metric
What tool would be used for linear measurement?
Rules and tape measures
What is the main difference between using a ruler and a tape measure?
Ruler for small measurements and tape measure for long measurements
What is a caliper used for?
High accuracy measurements, more exact than a ruler
What might you use to measure the diameter of a pill or a small sphere?
A caliper
What is a micrometer?
Similar to a caliper, can measure within one one-thousandth of an inch (0.001in)
What are levels?
Device for getting a horizontal plane
How does a level work?
Small tube with a bubble with an indicator of where the bubble should be
What are the 2 types of level we cover?
I-Beam levels and torpedo levels
What is the difference between I-Beam levels and torpedo levels?
I-Beam is longer than torpedo
What is used to measure the speed or velocity of gasses?
Anemometer
What are the 3 types of anenometers?
Vane style, Hot wire thermo, Digital Barometer
What is used to measure the internal pressure and/or vacuum of a vessel or system?
Pressure gauge
Internal pressure can either be made by?
Gas or liquid
What are the three types of pressure gauges?
Bourdon tube, diapragm, and magnehelic
Between bourdon and diaphragm, which of the two pressure gauges is suitable for low pressure application?
Diaphragm
Between bourdon and diaphragm, which of the two pressure gauges is better for overloading the pressure gauge?
Bourdon
Between bourdon and diaphragm, which of the two pressure gauges have a wider industrial application?
Bourdon
What does a magnehelic gauge do?
Measure pressure across two points
What is a BSC used for?
It protects against airborne biological hazards
How do we measure temperature?
Themometer
What temp does water freeze at in *C and *F?
0*C, 32*F
What temp does water boil at in *C and *F?
100*C, 212*F
What is the average human body temp in *C and *F?
36.8*C, 98.2*F
How do liquid thermometers work? (Think mercury)
Liquid expands at a measurable rate when heated, so therometers are filled with either mercury or ethanol
What is RTD stand for?
Resistance temperature detector
What does RTD mean?
As temp of element increase, so does resistance of electricity, ohms
How do electronic thermometers work?
Heat is detected and transmitted to voltage
How do Infrared thermometers work?
The IR sensors measure energy radiated from a warm surface and convert it into temperature readings
What is humidity?
The wetness of the air around us
How is humidity measured?
Measured as %Relative Humidity, with a hygrometer
How do electric hygrometers work?
They measure capacitance or resistance from a sample of air and turn it into humidity readings
