Hemostasis
The process that prevents and stops bleeding, or hemorrhage.
Sodium citrate
An anticoagulant used in blood collection that prevents blood from clotting by binding calcium.
Polycythemia Vera
A blood disorder causing higher than normal red blood cell levels, influencing anticoagulant adjustment.
Prothrombin Time (PT)
A test measuring the time it takes for blood to clot, assessing the extrinsic pathway and common coagulation factors.
Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT)
A test that measures the time for blood to clot via the intrinsic and common pathways, often used to evaluate heparin therapy.
Thromboelastography (TEG)
A viscoelastic test that evaluates the clotting function of blood and the dynamics of clot formation and breakdown.
Mixing Study
A test performed to differentiate between a factor deficiency and the presence of inhibitors affecting clotting.
Factor XIII
A coagulation factor that stabilizes fibrin by forming covalent bonds, crucial for proper clot formation.
D-Dimer
A fibrin degradation product measured to assess fibrinolysis and often used in the diagnosis of thromboembolic disorders.
Ristocetin
An antibiotic that triggers platelet aggregation, particularly used in assays for von Willebrand disease.
Platelet Aggregometry
A laboratory test that measures the aggregation of platelets in response to various agonists, assessing platelet function.
Platelet Functions Assays
Tests designed to evaluate the functional capacity of platelets under various conditions, such as aggregation or secretion.
Fibrinogen Assay
A test that measures the level of fibrinogen in the blood, important for diagnosing bleeding disorders.
Thrombin Time
A test that measures the time it takes for thrombin to convert fibrinogen into fibrin, affected by fibrinogen levels and presence of inhibitors.
Fibrinolysis
The process by which clots are dissolved in the body, often monitored through D-Dimer levels.
Lupus Anticoagulant
An autoimmune condition that increases the risk of thrombosis by interfering with normal coagulation processes.
Glanzmann's Thrombasthenia
A hereditary disorder characterized by a deficiency in glycoprotein IIb/IIIa, leading to impaired platelet aggregation.
