What is Epidemiology?
study of disease determinants and distribution
Purpose of Epidemiology?
to find:
cause
amount of disease
usual course of disease
preventions & treatments
policies to help reduce disease
how does disease distribution change as a country becomes industrialized?
Chronic/non-communicable (e.g. heart disease) goes up
Infectious disease (e.g. flu) goes down
why is it important to find high risk groups?
identifying high risk groups 1) help them realize what they gotta do to help 2) allow for targeted interventions
Why is it important to identify subclinical cases?
for secondary prevention and also to prevent disease spreading
