Human Geography

The study of where and why human activities are located where they are

globe

a round model of the Earth

Equator

an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0°.

International Date Line

An arc that for the most part follows 180° longitude, although it deviates in several places to avoid dividing land areas. When you cross the International Date Line heading east (toward America), the clock moves back 24 hours, or one entire day. When you go west (toward Asia), the calendar moves ahead one day.

Prime Meridian

The meridian, designated at 0° longitude, which passes through the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, England.

a box or other display on a map that explains the meaning of the symbols used on the map

tells the subject of the map

North Arrow

a graphical device on a map used to show the orientation of the map

Map Scale Bar

the feature on a map that tells how a measured space on the map relates to the actual distance on Earth

Metadata (or citation)

data that describes other data

Neatline (border)

The border delineating and defining the extent of geographic data on a map

inset (locator) map

a smaller map set within the border of a larger one

distortion

a change in the shape, size, or position of a place when it is shown on a map

map projection

a way of representing the spherical Earth on a flat surface

Regional Map

A display that shows the division and classification of specific areas of the world

political map

A map showing units such as countries, states, provinces, districts, etc. Each is normally a different color

Physical/Topographical Map

Shows physical land features (mountains, rivers, deserts, lakes, etc.)

region

An area distinguished by a unique combination of trends or features.

absolute location

Exact location of a place on the earth described by global coordinates

relative location

The position of a place in relation to another place

climate

Overall weather in an area over a long period of time

Biome

A group of ecosystems that share similar climates and typical organisms
