descartes’ conclusion

we have no reason to think these scenarios are true, but what evidence can prove they are not?

- if they are true, our experience would be exactly as it is now, so we can’t know they are not

- so, our usual justifications for claiming that we know there is an external material world are insufficient

descartes’ response to his conclusion

responds to global scepticism with the use of the intuition and deduction:

- beginning with the cogito, evil demon can still know I think and exist

- he builds this with c&ds, enabling his to argue that truths of maths (analytic truths) are indubitable and so he can know these

what is descartes left uncertain with?

  • the cause of sense perception, so the existence of a world of mind-independent POs

  • he has sensory experiences in his dreams as well, when. he is not seeing or hearing at all

  • exploring his ideas reveals POs are extended in space but only conceptually
