Information Literacy

The ability to recognize when information is needed and effectively locate, evaluate, and use the needed information.

Primary Source

Information that comes directly from the original source.

Secondary Source

An interpretation or analysis of a primary source.

Tertiary Source

A compilation or summary of primary sources.

The Big Six

A skill model of information problem-solving developed by Mike Eisenberg and Bob Berkowitz, applicable whenever people need and use information.

Intellectual Properties

A category of property that includes creations of human intellect.

Copyright

A form of intellectual property protection that safeguards the authorship of original works, such as literary, artistic, musical, and architectural creations.

Public Domain

Works that are no longer protected by copyright and can be used, modified, and sold freely.

Fair Use

The limited use of copyrighted material for purposes such as criticism or certain circumstances.

Patents

Limited duration protection used to safeguard new and useful discoveries and inventions.

Trademarks

Distinguishable words or phrases that belong to a product or service, providing exclusive rights to the owner.

Trade secrets

Important specific, private information that gives a business a competitive advantage and can harm the original holder if acquired by another company.
