Environmental Toxins
Chemical pollutants in the environment that have adverse effects on biologic organisms.
Exposure Route
The method by which a pollutant is brought into contact with a target organism, such as inhalation, ingestion, or dermal absorption.
1,4-Dioxane
A chemical used in industrial processes, found as a byproduct in consumer products like shampoos and detergents that can lead to acute and chronic health effects.
Particulate Matter (PM2.5)
Fine inhalable particles in the air with diameters generally 2.5 micrometers and smaller, known to worsen respiratory and cardiovascular health.
Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA)
A method used to estimate disease risk based on exposure to microbial contaminants.
Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY)
A measure that combines years of life lost due to premature death and years lived with disability due to illness.
Environmental Justice
fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
Socioeconomic Factors
Social and economic conditions that influence individual and community health, including income, education, and access to healthcare.
Cancer Alley
A region in Louisiana known for its high levels of pollution and significantly increased cancer risk due to the presence of numerous chemical plants.
Acute Exposure
Short-term exposure to a substance that occurs over a limited duration and may have immediate effects.
Chronic Exposure
Long-term exposure to a substance that occurs over an extended period and may impact health over time.
