Ecosystems
Ecosystems are complex networks formed by the interaction of living (biotic) components such as plants, animals, and microorganisms, with nonliving (abiotic) elements like water, air, soil, and climate within a specific environment.
Biome
A biome is a major ecological unit characterized by specific climatic conditions, such as temperature, precipitation, and vegetation types, which support distinct communities of plants and animals adapted to those conditions.
Tundra
The tundra is a cold biome typically found in polar regions, characterized by short growing seasons, low biodiversity, and permanently frozen subsoil known as permafrost, limiting plant growth primarily to mosses, lichens, and low shrubs.
Desert
Deserts are biomes that receive less than 25 centimeters (10 inches) of rainfall annually. They are marked by sparse vegetation and extreme temperature fluctuations, with very hot or very cold climates, adapted plant and animal species, and unique survival strategies.
Climate
Climate refers to the long-term average of weather patterns, including temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation, in a particular region, typically measured over decades or centuries.
Latitude
Latitude is the measurement of a location's distance from the equator, expressed in degrees north or south. It significantly influences the climate and biological diversity of a region.
Precipitation
Precipitation is the collective term for various forms of water, such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail, that fall from the atmosphere to the ground, playing a crucial role in determining the moisture levels of a biome.
Temperate Grassland
Temperate grasslands are biomes characterized by moderate precipitation and vast open areas dominated by grasses, with few trees or large shrubs. They experience seasonal temperature variations, which influence plant and animal life.
Rainshadow Effect
The rainshadow effect occurs when moist air masses ascend over a mountain range, cooling and causing precipitation on the windward side, while the leeward side receives significantly less rain, creating drier conditions.
Climatograph
A climatograph is a graphical representation that displays average temperature and precipitation data over a typical year for a specific biome, often combining line graphs (for temperature) and bar graphs (for precipitation).
Biodiversity
Biodiversity refers to the variety and variability of life forms within a particular ecosystem or geographic area, encompassing species diversity, genetic diversity, and ecosystem diversity, playing a crucial role in ecosystem stability and resilience.
Emergent Layer
The emergent layer is the highest layer in a rainforest ecosystem, characterized by towering trees that extend above the canopy, receiving the most direct sunlight and serving as a habitat for various birds, insects, and other animals.
Canopy
The canopy is the uppermost layer of a forest, formed by the interlocking branches and leaves of tall trees. It represents the primary habitat for many species of birds, mammals, and insects, creating a rich and diverse ecological environment.
Coniferous Forest
A coniferous forest, also known as a boreal forest or taiga, is a biome populated primarily by coniferous trees (evergreen trees such as pines and spruces), featuring long, cold winters and shorter, mild summers.
Deciduous Forest
Deciduous forests are biomes characterized by trees that shed their leaves annually, experiencing seasonal changes. These forests typically have a rich diversity of plant and animal species, thriving in the temperate climate.
Savanna
Savannas are unique biomes that function as tropical grasslands, characterized by scattered trees and extensive open spaces. They are typically found between tropical rainforests and deserts and experience seasonal rainfall patterns.
Taiga
The taiga, also referred to as boreal forest, is the coldest and driest of all forest biomes, characterized by long, harsh winters and short summers, predominantly comprised of coniferous trees that are well adapted to extreme conditions.
Abiotic Factors
Abiotic factors are the nonliving components in an ecosystem that affect living organisms and their environment, including factors such as sunlight, water, temperature, soil composition, and atmospheric conditions.
Biotic Factors
Biotic factors encompass all living components in an ecosystem, including organisms' interactions, such as predator-prey relationships, competition, symbiosis, and the presence or absence of species that can significantly influence the ecosystem's health.
El Niño
El Niño is a climate phenomenon characterized by the periodic warming of ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific, significantly impacting global weather patterns, including increased rainfall and unusual temperature shifts.
La Niña
La Niña is a complementary climate phenomenon to El Niño, characterized by cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, influencing weather conditions by causing drier conditions in some regions and increased rainfall in others.
