Conduct of vessels in Restricted Visibility

When does rule 19 apply?

When navigating IN or NEAR an area of restricted visibility

How should vessels navigate in restricted visibility?

SHALL- Establish safe speed

SHALL- Have her engines ready for immediate maneuver

If a vessel is detected by radar alone and they are forward of your beam, what should you do?

Do NOT alter course to port

If radar detects a vessel abeam or abaft the beam what should they NOT do?

DO NOT turn towards the vessel

If you hear a fog signal forward of beam/can’t avoid a close quarters situation, what should you do?

Reduce speed to bare steerageway

Rule 20

Rules in this part shall be complied with in all weathers (at all times)

When shall rules concerning lights be complied with?

From sunset to sunrise, or when in restricted visibility

When should day shapes be used?

During the day

What is a masthead light?

A WHITE LIGHT fore and aft centerline of a vessel 225 degrees

What are sidelights

Green STBD lights, red port lights 112.5 degrees

Sternlight

WHITE lights 135 degrees

Towing light

Yellow 135 degree light at stern of vessel

All around light

360 degree light, ANY COLOR

Flashing light

Flashes at frequency of 120 flashes or more per minute

Special flashing light INLAND ONLY

A yellow light with frequency of 50 to 70 flashes per minute

What is the arc of visibility of a special flashing light INLAND ONLY

180 degres to 225 degrees

What shall a PDV <50 m underway exhibit?

A MH light, sidelights, and a stern light

What should a PDV > 50 m display?

2 MH lights, side lights, and a stern light

What should a PDV <20 m display?

1 MH light, sternlight, and can combine side lights

What should a PDV <12 m display?

Can combine MH light and sternlight, can combine sidelights

What should a PDV that is <7m and <7 knots display?

One all around white light only

What should an air cushioned vessel in non-displacement mode exhibit?

An all around flashing yellow light

What should a WIG crafty display?

A high intensity all-around flashing red light
