What is an analog signal?
An analog signal is a continuous waveform that changes over time and can have an infinite number of values within a given range.
What is a digital signal?
A digital signal is a discrete signal that can only take on a limited number of values, usually represented as binary digits (0s and 1s).
What does it mean for a signal to be continuous?
A continuous signal is one where the signal can have any value within a range, with no breaks or interruptions. Analog signals are examples of continuous signals.
What does it mean for a signal to be discrete?
A discrete signal is one where the signal can only have specific values at specific points in time. Digital signals are examples of discrete signals.
How does noise affect analog and digital signals?
Noise can cause distortion in analog signals, changing the amplitude, frequency, or phase of the wave. Digital signals, on the other hand, are more resistant to noise as long as the noise doesn't cause a change in the discrete value.
When would you use an analog signal over a digital one, and vice versa?
Analog signals are often used when the signal source is also analog, such as sound waves. Digital signals are often used when the signal needs to be processed or stored by a computer, or transmitted over a long distance.
Why are digital signals often represented as binary digits (0s and 1s)?
Binary digits (0s and 1s) are the most basic form of information that a computer can process. By representing digital signals as binary digits, it simplifies the processing and storage of the signal.
