Ilaya
The upper, inland, upland, or landward area of a community, often connected to hills, mountains, farms, forests, and land-based livelihoods.
Ilawod
The lower, downstream, riverward, or seaward area of a community, often connected to rivers, coastal areas, fishing, water routes, and maritime trade.
Cultural-Geographic Experiences
The understanding that geographical locations like Ilaya and Ilawod are not merely physical spaces, but lived cultural experiences that shape daily routines, practices, and identity.
Historical Consciousness
An awareness of how place, physical environment, local memories, and community experiences shape identity and historical understanding over time.
Igorot
Several Indigenous groups from the Cordillera region in Northern Luzon whose mountain environment influenced practices such as terrace farming, upland settlement, and land management.
Binukot
A tradition associated with some Panay Bukidnon communities in Western Visayas involving a carefully protected woman kept from heavy labor and public exposure, who is trained in oral traditions, chants, and cultural stories.
Moro
Muslim Filipino communities primarily in Mindanao, Sulu, and Palawan (including groups such as Maranao, Maguindanao, Tausug, and Yakan) whose cultures are shaped by Islam, trade, sultanates, and coastal or land environments.
Badjao
Sea-oriented communities traditionally living near coastal areas or on boats, whose way of life is closely tied to marine resources, fishing, diving, and boating.
