Pelvic Girdle
A bony ring formed by the sacrum and hip bones, connected anteriorly at the pubic symphysis, which functions in weight bearing, weight transference, and protection.
Ilium
The most superior aspect of the hip bone.
Ischium
The most posterior aspect of the hip bone.
Pubis
The most anterior aspect of the hip bone.
Bone Spine
A pointed projection of bone shaped like a angle symbol.
Bone Notch
A part of the bone that has been cut out to allow the passage of neurovascular structures such as nerves.
Bone Tuberosity
A large roughened surface on a bone designed for the attachment of large muscles.
Psoas Minor
An iliac region muscle attaching proximally to the sides of bodies of T12 and L1 vertebrae and IV discs, and distally to the pecten pubis and iliopubic eminence; innervated by anterior rami of lumbar nerves (L1, L2).
Psoas Major
An iliac region muscle attaching proximally to transverse processes and bodies of T12\text{--}L5 vertebrae, and distally to the lesser trochanter of the femur; acts to flex the hip and trunk.
Iliacus
An iliac region muscle attaching proximally to the superior 32 of the iliac fossa, ala of sacrum, and sacro-iliac ligaments, and distally to the lesser trochanter of the femur; innervated by the femoral nerve.
Tensor Fasciae Latae
A superficial gluteal muscle originating at the ASIS and iliac crest, inserting into Gerdy's tubercle via the ilio-tibial band; responsible for hip flexion, abduction, medial rotation, and keeping the ipsilateral pelvis level during single-leg stance.
Gluteus Maximus
A superficial gluteal muscle originating from the posterior ilium, sacrum, coccyx, and sacrotuberous ligament, inserting into the IT band and gluteal tuberosity; acts in hip extension and lateral rotation.
Gluteus Medius
A superficial gluteal muscle located between the posterior and anterior gluteal lines of the ilium, inserting on the lateral surface of the greater trochanter; acts as the prime mover of abduction.
Gluteus Minimus
A superficial gluteal muscle located between the anterior and inferior gluteal lines of the ilium, inserting on the anterior surface of the greater trochanter; acts in hip abduction and medial rotation.
Piriformis
A deep gluteal muscle originating from the anterior surface of the sacrum and inserting on the superior border of the greater trochanter of the femur; innervated by branches of anterior rami of S1, S2.
Superior Gemellus
A deep gluteal lateral rotator originating from the ischial spine and inserting into the trochanteric fossa of the femur; innervated by the nerve to obturator internus.
Obturator Internus
A deep gluteal muscle originating from the internal surface of the obturator membrane and inserting into the trochanteric fossa of the femur.
Inferior Gemellus
A deep gluteal lateral rotator originating from the ischial tuberosity and inserting into the trochanteric fossa of the femur; innervated by the nerve to quadratus femoris.
Quadratus Femoris
A deep gluteal muscle originating from the lateral border of the ischial tuberosity and inserting on the quadrate tubercle of the femur; responsible for hip lateral rotation.
Pectineus
A medial thigh muscle originating from the superior ramus of the pubis and inserting on the pectineal line of the femur; innervated by both the femoral and obturator nerves.
Adductor Longus
A medial thigh muscle originating from the lateral aspect of the body of the pubis and inserting on the middle 31 of the linea aspera of the femur.
Adductor Brevis
A medial thigh muscle originating from the body and inferior ramus of the pubis and inserting on the pectineal line and proximal part of the linea aspera of the femur.
Adductor Magnus
A large medial thigh muscle composed of an adductor part and a hamstring part; performs hip adduction and extension, innervated by the obturator nerve.
Gracilis
A medial thigh muscle originating from the body and inferior ramus of the pubis and inserting on the anterior surface of the medial condyle of the tibia; acts in hip adduction, knee flexion, and medial rotation.
