CALAMBA TO MANILA: SECONDARY SCHOOL
Paciano Mercado accompanied Rizal to Manila in 1872. Rizal took the exam in Colegio de San Juan de Letran; Rizal passed.
Rizal barely entered Ateneo for two reasons:
-Too small for his age
-The term has begun

•Titay owed the family 300pesos so instead of paying Rizal stayed with her.

•Living in Ateneo made him feel at ease and at peace.
His life as a student varies. Nevertheless, his experiences as a child away from home
proved valuable for his maturity at a young age and latter years.
A normal class in Ateneo during Rizal's time had more or less 12 students. The class usually is divided into:
Romans and Carthaginians.
