Anatomic position
The universal reference frame used when comparing one body part to another

sagittal plane
any vertically oriented plane that divides the body into right and left portions

Median plane
a sagittal plane that courses through the entire anterior (front) and posterior (back) midlines of the body. it is parallel to other sagittal planes. The median plane is sometimes called the midsagittal plane.

Coronal plane
any vertically oriented plane perpendicular to the median plane which divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions. Frontal plane is a former name for this plane

Tranverse Plane
any horizontally oriented plane that divides the head, neck, trunk, or limbs into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions. Sometimes this plane is referred to as a horizontal plane.

Directional Terms

Posterior

Inferior

Proximal
toward or relatively closer to a reference point. This term is usually applied to the limbs with the reference point at the attachment of the limb to the trunk. When used on a limb, it has the same general meaning as superior except on the foot where it is equivalent to posterior due to the perpendicular angle at the ankle. When it is applied to the alimentary canal (digestive tube), the reference point is usually the mouth and when it is applied to cardiovascular structures, the reference is usually the heart. Venous blood flows this way in the limbs as it returns to the trunk from the feet and hands.

Distal
Away from or farther from a reference point. Applied to limbs where it means same as inferior (except for feet)

Middle
a position between superior/inferior, anterior/posterior, proximal/distal, or superficial/deep
Intermediate
A side-to-side position between medial and lateral structures
