Human Anatomy and Physiology
The scientific study of the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the human body, providing the basis for understanding diseases and evaluating treatments.
Anatomy
The scientific discipline that investigates the structure of the body; it involves dissecting, cutting apart, and separating parts of the body for study.
Systemic Anatomy
The study of the body by systems.
Regional Anatomy
The study of the body by areas.
Surface Anatomy
The study of internal structures of a living person by looking at the external surface.
Anatomical Imaging
A method that involves the use of X-rays, ultrasound, MRI, CT scan, and other modalities to take pictures of internal structures.
Physiology
The scientific discipline that deals with the processes or functions of living things.
Gross (Macroscopic) Anatomy
The study of structures visible to the naked eye.
Microscopic Anatomy
The study of structures at the level of cells and tissues.
Developmental Anatomy
The study of changes that occur from fertilization to adulthood.
Clinical Anatomy
The application of anatomical knowledge in the field of medicine.
Pathology
The medical science dealing with all aspects of diseases, focusing on causes, development of abnormal conditions, and structural/functional changes.
Chemical Level
The level of organization where atoms combine to form molecules, such as collagen molecules that provide skin strength.
Cellular Level
The level where molecules interact to form organelles and cells, which are the basic building blocks of all living things.
Tissue Level
Groups of cells working together to perform specific functions; examples include epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissues.
Organ Level
A structure composed of two or more tissues working in combination to perform several functions, such as the stomach or heart.
Organ System Level
A level where organs interact in groups to perform functions, such as the kidneys and urinary bladder within the urinary system.
Organism Level
The highest level of structural organization, representing an individual living thing such as a human.
Metabolism
All the chemical reactions taking place in an organism, including breaking down substances (catabolism) and synthesizing complex ones (anabolism).
Responsiveness
The ability of an organism to sense changes in its external or internal environment and adjust to those changes.
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a variable, such as body temperature, around an ideal normal value or set point.
Set Point
The ideal normal value around which a variable fluctuates to establish a normal range of values.
Negative Feedback
The primary mechanism for maintaining homeostasis where any deviation from the set point is made smaller or resisted.
Receptor
A sensor that detects stimuli or changes in the internal or external environment.
Control Center
A component, such as the hypothalamus in the brain, that receives and processes information supplied by the receptor.
Effector
A cell or organ that responds to the commands of the control center to carry out a response that restores normal conditions.
Positive Feedback
A mechanism that occurs when an initial stimulus further stimulates a response, making the deviation from the set point even greater until a specific event is completed.
Anatomical Position
A standardized position where a person stands erect with the face directed forward, arms hanging at the sides, and palms facing forward.
Superior (Cephalad)
Toward the head or the upper part of the body.
Inferior (Caudal)
Away from the head end or toward the lower part of the body.
Anterior (Ventral)
Toward the front of the body.
Posterior (Dorsal)
Toward the back of the body.
Supine
The position of lying face upward.
Prone
The position of lying face downward.
Medial
Toward the midline of the body.
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body.
Proximal
Close to the origin of the body or the point of attachment.
Distal
Farther from the origin or the point of attachment.
Superficial
Located on or near the surface of the body.
Deep
Located away from the body surface; more internal.
Sagittal Plane
An imaginary vertical plane that passes through the body and separates it into left and right portions.
Median Plane
A specific sagittal plane that divides the body into equal right and left halves.
Transverse (Horizontal) Plane
A plane that divides the body into superior and inferior portions.
Frontal (Coronal) Plane
A plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior parts.
Integumentary System
Provides protection, regulates temperature, and prevents water loss; consists of skin, hair, nails, and sweat glands.
Skeletal System
Provides protection and support, allows movements, and produces blood cells; consists of bones, cartilages, ligaments, and joints.
Muscular System
Produces body movements, maintains posture, and produces body heat; consists of muscles attached to the skeleton by tendons.
Lymphatic System
Removes foreign substances from blood and lymph, combats disease, and maintains tissue fluid balance.
Respiratory System
Exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood and air and regulates blood pH; consists of lungs and respiratory passages.
Digestive System
Performs mechanical and chemical processes of digestion, absorption of nutrients, and elimination of wastes.
Nervous System
A major regulatory system that detects sensations and controls movements, physiological processes, and intellectual functions.
Endocrine System
A major regulatory system that influences metabolism, growth, and reproduction through glands that secrete hormones.
Cardiovascular System
Transports nutrients, waste products, gases, and hormones; plays a role in immune response and temperature regulation.
Urinary System
Removes waste products from the blood and regulates blood pH, ion balance, and water balance.
