What is a parasite?
An organism that relies on its host and feeds on it.
Tapeworms
Live in the host's intestine and attach themselves using suckers or hooks. They absorb nutrients through their body surface. They are a type of flatworm with a long, flat body. They attach with hooks or suction cups and absorb food through their skin.
Nematodes
Animals with round bodies found in various hosts, including roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides).
Roundworms
Found mainly in intestines. The mature worm lives in the body and lays eggs, which exit through feces.

Causes giardiasis, a diarrheal illness. Typically found in contaminated water.
Entamoeba histolytica
Causes amebiasis, which can lead to dysentery and liver abscesses.
Cryptosporidium
Causes cryptosporidiosis, a diarrheal disease. It is highly resistant to chlorine disinfection.
Plasmodium
Causes malaria, a life-threatening disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Infects red blood cells.
