Philosophical assumptions in behavior analysis
Theoretical frameworks utilized by researchers and practitioners to collect, analyze, interpret data, and establish the foundational background required for clinical decisions.
Six core philosophical assumptions of science
Determinism, Empiricism, Experimentation, Replication, Parsimony, and Philosophic Doubt.
Grammatical distinction between data and datum
Data is a plural noun referring to multiple observations, whereas datum is the singular noun for a single observation.
Determinism
The philosophical assumption that the universe is a lawful and orderly place in which phenomena occur in relation to other events, rather than randomly or predeterminately.
Environmental determinants of behavior
Antecedents (environmental triggers occurring before behavior) and consequences (reinforcing or punishing outcomes following behavior).
Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)
A core ABA methodology designed to identify the environmental causes or functions of a behavior in order to develop effective intervention plans.
Empiricism
The practice of objective observation of phenomena of interest, independent of individual biases, prejudices, tastes, or private opinions.
Primary observational requirement of empiricism in ABA
Direct observational data and systematic measurement of behavior magnitude and rate, rather than secondary verbal reports or subjective satisfaction.
Experimentation
The controlled manipulation of variables and repeated measurement of phenomena to discover functional relations.
Dependent variable (DV) in behavioral experimentation
The observable target behavior measured systematically over time to observe patterns and evaluate treatment effects.
Independent variable (IV) in behavioral experimentation
The specific environmental aspect or intervention manipulated by the experimenter to assess its direct impact on behavior.
Essential components of a behavioral experiment
Replication
The repetition of experiments (or experimental conditions within a study) to determine the reliability and validity of findings.
Within-study vs. across-study replication
Within-study replication repeats conditions with a single participant (e.g., an ABAB design), while across-study replication repeats procedures across different subjects, settings, or clinicians.
Treatment integrity (treatment fidelity)
The degree to which an intervention plan is implemented correctly and consistently as designed across practitioners and settings.
Institutional barriers to replication (Hantula, 2019)
Peer-reviewed journal publication bias favoring novel findings over direct replications, and funding allocation favoring new studies over replication projects.
Meta-analysis
A quantitative research methodology that aggregates data across published replication studies, converting outcomes into standardized effect sizes to evaluate overall empirical support.
Parsimony
The practice of ruling out simple, logical explanations experimentally or conceptually before considering more complex, abstract, or mentalistic explanations.
Occam's razor
A scientific principle stating that entities and assumptions should not be multiplied unnecessarily, preferring the simplest competing theory.
Philosophic doubt
A scientific attitude requiring practitioners to continuously question, doubt, and re-examine established facts, rules, theories, and data.
Facilitated Communication (historical case study)
A 1990s technique for non-verbal individuals that was disproven through double-blind empirical testing, revealing that typed messages were produced by facilitators' implicit physical prompts rather than the clients.
