refers to teaching a behavioral chain beginning with the first step: have the child complete the target step(s), at the beginning of the chain, independently and then prompt all remaining steps.
Forward Chaining
refers to teaching a behavioral chain beginning with the last step: you prompt the entire chain of behaviors except the target step(s) at the end of the chain.
Backward Chaining
You are working on hand washing with your learner. You prompt them through all the steps of washing and drying hands, allowing them to throw the paper towel away on their own. This is an example of:
Backward Chaining
Which type of chaining results in the learner receiving reinforcement after they perform the final step in the chain?
Backward Chaining
Allowing a learner to open a box of cake mix but prompting all the other steps when learning to bake a cake is what kind of chaining?
Forward Chaining
Mia is working with a client on brushing their teeth. To do so, she splits up the steps in small pieces and starts going step by step, moving onto the next step after the client has demonstrated the task with or without prompting. Which of the following is Mia using?
Chaining
You are trying to teach your client to wash your hands. Your BCBA instructs you to use backwards chaining to teach this. What step might you teach first?
1. Turn on water
2. Wet hands
3. Get soap
4. Rub hands
5. Rinse hands
6. Turn off water
Turn off water
You are teaching your client how to boil noodles for spaghetti. You prompt then to take out the pot, fill it with water, put it on the stove, turn the stove on, wait for the water to boil, put the noodles in, check the noodles to see if they are ready, and then you provide them praise as reinforcement for draining the noodles when done. What type of task chaining are you implementing?
Backward Chaining
You are working with your teenage learner to fold a towel. Your BCBA instructs you to use forward chaining. What step will you teach first?
1. Lay the towel flat on the table
2. Take the top two corners in each hand
3. Bring the top edge down to the bottom edge
4. Bring the left edge to the right edge
5. Smooth the towel flat
6. Place the folded towel in the basket
Lay the towel flat on the table
You are working with your teenage learner to fold a towel. Your BCBA instructs you to use forward chaining. What kind of prompting will you use for the target step of bringing the top edge down to the bottom edge?
1. Lay the towel flat on the table (mastered)
2. Take the top two corners in each hand (mastered)
3. Bring the top edge down to the bottom edge (target)
4. Bring the left edge to the right edge (errorless prompt)
5. Smooth the towel flat (errorless prompt)
6. Place the folded towel in the basket (errorless prompt)
Least amount of prompting necessary (modeling is probably the best way to do this)
Here is the task analysis for hand washing using a forward chain. If steps 4-5 tell you to use errorless prompting, what does this mean?
1. Turn on water (mastered)
2. Wet hands (mastered)
3. Get soap (mastered)
4. Rub hands (target)
5. Rinse hands (errorless prompt)
6. Turn off Water (errorless prompt)
The most amount of prompting to have the patient complete those steps
Here is the task analysis for hand washing using a forward chain. Once the patient masters the step to rub hands, what step will be taught next?
1. Turn on water (mastered)
2. Wet hands (mastered)
3. Get soap (mastered)
4. Rub hands (target)
5. Rinse hands (errorless prompt)
6. Turn off Water (errorless prompt)
Rinse hands
