Schedules of Reinforcement
Rules used to determine when reinforcement is given.
Continuous Reinforcement (CRF)
A reinforcement schedule where every response is reinforced, rapidly strengthening new behavior.
Extinction (EXT)
The process where reinforcement for a response is terminated, leading to a decrease in that behavior.
Extinction Burst
An increase in response frequency immediately following the onset of extinction.
Resurgence
The re-emergence of previously reinforced behaviors when reinforcement is not available for the target behavior.
Spontaneous Recovery
The reappearance of an extinguished behavior after a rest period.
Fixed Ratio (FR) Schedule
A reinforcement schedule that delivers reinforcement after a set number of responses.
Variable Ratio (VR) Schedule
A reinforcement schedule where reinforcement is delivered after an unpredictable number of responses.
Fixed Interval (FI) Schedule
A reinforcement schedule that delivers reinforcement after a specified time interval has elapsed.
Variable Interval (VI) Schedule
A reinforcement schedule where reinforcement is delivered after an unpredictable time interval.
Differential Reinforcement of High Rates (DRH)
Reinforcement is delivered if a minimum number of responses occurs within a specific time period.
Differential Reinforcement of Low Rates (DRL)
Reinforcement is provided if the time between responses is greater than a specified amount of time.
Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior (DRO)
Reinforcement given for any behavior other than the unwanted behavior.
Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible Behavior (DRI)
Reinforcement provided for a behavior that is incompatible with an unwanted behavior, reducing the unwanted behavior more quickly than extinction.
Chain Schedule
A schedule that requires the completion of a sequence of behaviors in a specific order, each with its own reinforcement.
Multiple Schedule
Involves any type of specific schedule presented one after the other with different stimuli.
Mixed Schedule
Similar to a multiple schedule but with the same stimulus in every component.
Anticipatory Contrast
A phenomenon where a schedule that is more valuable leads to a higher rate of responding than a less valuable schedule.
