organelles

Small and specialized units that work together inside a cell.

cell membrane

Outer layer in all cells. Controls the materials that move into and out of the cell.

cell wall

Supports (provides shape & structure) and protects the cell.

nucleus

Directs all of the cell's activities (control center). Controls growth & reproduction.

cytoplasm

Jelly-like material found throughout cell. Contains some nutrients for cell.

vacuole

Water filled sac that acts as a storage area for food, wastes & other materials needed by the cell.

chloroplast

Large green organelles found only in plant cells that capture energy from the sun & use it to produce food for the cell.

mitochondria

"Powerhouse" of the cell. Releases energy stored in food (cellular respiration).

ribosomes

Makes proteins for the cell.

lysosomes

Found only in animal cell. Aids in removing excess or worn out organelles, food particles, & viruses or bacteria.

endoplasmic reticulum

Carries proteins & other materials from one part of the cell to another.

golgi bodies

Processes & packages proteins & distributes them to other parts of the cell.

Differences between plant & animal cells

Both contain same organelles except: Plant cell contains cell wall & chloroplasts; Animal cell contains lysosomes.
