Physical Property
A characteristic of a material that can be observed or measured without changing the composition of the substance.
Working Property
Describes how a material behaves when external forces are applied, such as bending, cutting, or shaping.
Primary Research
First-hand accounts or research you have completed yourself.
Secondary Research
Data obtained from other people's gathered and presented research.
User Centred Design
Design based around understanding and fulfilling the needs, wants, and limitations of the client or user.
Ergonomics
The study of how humans interact with products, focusing on ease of use, comfort, and safety; designs sized to fit the body.
Anthropometrics
The study of the varying sizes of all the parts of a human body.
Tessellation
The close arrangement of shapes without overlapping to reduce waste.
Iterative Design
Making small steps with constant changes as feedback is gained.
Specification
A set of design criteria created before the designing process begins to set targets and parameters for the designer.
Line (Design)
A mark made on a surface that joins different points, varying in length, width, direction, and shape.
Texture (Design)
Describes the surface quality of the material, referencing the types of lines the artist created. Can be tactile or visual.
Colour (Design)
Choices of color and the relationships between colors, impacting the look, feel, and emotions provoked by a design.
Form (Design)
Refers to three-dimensional objects, defined by height, width, and depth.
Shape (Design)
Two-dimensional; can be geometric (perfect and regular) or organic (irregular and natural).
Isometric Drawing
A way of presenting designs in three dimensions where vertical lines remain vertical, and horizontal lines are drawn at 30° to the horizontal.
Working Drawing
A scale drawing of a chosen design idea that serves as a guide for construction or manufacture, including structure, dimensions, and materials.
Third Angle Orthographic Drawing
A 2D method of drawing items at right angles, showing sizes and details with three views (front, side, plan), usually in millimeters.
Sectional Drawings
Drawings that show the inside of an object as if it was cut in half, with cut areas shown by hatching at 45 degrees.
Scale Drawing
A drawing or model produced when it is impossible to draw the product/space the actual size, represented as a ratio like 1:5.
