Supernatural

Refers to something beyond the natural world or scientific understanding. A spiritual realm not limited tot he physical constraints of volume, mass or time. Existence outside the natural world.

Transcendent

External to the human and earthly/material world. Interacts with humanity from afar. e.g. God in heaven.

Immanent

Existing or operating within or around humans/humanity. A part or closely associated with the human person. e.g. God being seen in the actions of humanity.

Semitic

Refers to 3 monotheistic religions - christianity, islam and judaism. Tend to be western and based on revelation of truth to humankind through God.

Indus

Refers to polytheistic religions - Buddhism and Hinduism. Tend to be eastern and stress the role personal spiritual searching in the pursuit of truth.

beliefs and believers

The core characteristics of religious traditions establishing the religious worldview - abide by the beliefs and accept something exists.

Sacred texts and writings

A record of the beliefs and often include religious myths and stories such as those explaining how the world was created - authoritative sources of guidance, wisdom and divine revelation

Ethics

The core knowledge of right and wrong that guid the lives of religious adherents. Found mostly in sacred texts of the religious traditions often from the teachings of the founder.

Rituals and ceremonies

Such as prayer or sacrifice done collectively or individually- all linked to sacred symbols (cross or statue of gold) and social structures (sacred times, places or people). Done for worship and symbolic actions.

Dynamic living religion

A religion which changes/progresses/adapts characteristics to the current times/needs of the people while staying alive, (charismatic, practised, exciting, meaningful) relevant and not losing the central message. e.g. translating the bible to english, practising the 10 commandments etc.

Contribution of religion to individuals

Provide meaning for life, shapes identity, provides purpose. Provides guidelines and rules. Understands the civilisation and values. Sense of belonging, connection to others, coping mechanism, relationship with God and daily routine.

Contribution of religion to society

Theology/philosophy, promotes world peace, reflects how the society is governed, influences the way the society interacts woth other societies, helps to make sense of other religions and motivates people to act for positive change.
