Human-Centered Design (HCD)
An approach to system design that focuses on users' needs, requirements, and social context.
Affordances
The perceived possibilities for action in an environment or with an object.
Signifiers
Perceivable indicators that communicate how to use something; introduced by Don Norman to clarify the concept of affordances.
Feedback
A continuous loop of input from users to designers that informs the user that the system is working on their request.
Conceptual Models
Simplified mental representations that users form to understand and interact with a system or product.
Abstraction
The process of creating a simplified representation of a system without needing full complexity.
Double-Diamond Model of Design
A framework consisting of two phases: discovery and delivery that involves divergent and convergent thinking.
CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work)
Systems designed to support collaborative work among multiple users.
Social-Technical Gap
The divide between what must be supported socially and what can be supported technically in CSCW.
UML (Unified Modeling Language)
A standardized modeling language used to visualize the design of a system.
Class Diagram
A blueprint representing the structure of a system showing classes and relationships.
Use-case Diagram
Describes the high-level functions of a system and identifies interactions between the system and its actors.
Activity Diagram
Displays the sequence of activities and the workflow from a start point to a finish point.
Sequence Diagram
Describes how and in what order a group of objects work together.
Prototyping
A design method that allows designers to test out solutions without full implementation.
Prioritized Feedback
The most important type of feedback is structured to capture user attention and enhance usability.
Iteration
The process of refining designs based on feedback through cyclic returns to previous phases.
Nuanced Behavior
The complex and subtle ways in which individuals share information based on context.
Stereotypes (in UML)
Extend UML vocabulary to create new types of building blocks specific to a design problem.
Tagged Values (in UML)
Extend UML properties to add new information in an element’s specification.
Constraints (in UML)
Rules that modify the existing semantics of UML building blocks.
