Fungi
Eukaryotic organisms belonging to the Kingdom Fungi (Mycetae).
Chemoheterotrophs
Organisms that obtain carbon and energy from other organic sources and chemical compounds.
Saprobes
Organisms that eat dead organic matter.
Chitin
A carbohydrate that makes up the cell wall of most fungi.
Yeast
Single-celled fungi that reproduce asexually by budding.
Mold
Multicellular fungi made up of hyphae.
Hyphae
Filaments of cells that make up molds.
Monomorphic Fungus
Having only one form, either yeast or mold.
Plant Pathogens (Fungi)
Fungal pathogens that cause disease in plants, such as corn smut.
Opportunistic Mycoses
Fungal diseases, such as Aspergillosis, that occur in individuals with weakened immune systems.
Sporangiospore
A stalk structure with a sac-like structure that produces sporangiospores.
Gamydospore
Spores produced in segmented hypha.
Asexual Reproduction (Fungi)
A type of asexual reproduction in fungi involving budding or spore formation.
Sexual Reproduction (Fungi)
A type of reproduction in fungi involving the fusion of gametes to form spores.
Mycosis
Infection by a fungi.
Opportunistic Pathogen
Free-living organisms that can cause disease if given the opportunity, such as in immunocompromised individuals.
Vegetative Hyphae
Hyphae that digest and absorb nutrients.
Aerial Hyphae
Hyphae that produce spores.
Haustoria
Modified hyphae of parasitic fungi that penetrate tissues.
Psuedohyphae
A variation of haustoria where buds form a filament.
Asexual Spores
Spores produced by mitotic division.
Conidiospores
Spores produced at the end of hyphae.
Mycelium
A mass of hyphae, typical of mold.
Hypha
Long, tube-like filaments of cytoplasm. May be branched or unbranched
Septate Hypha
Hypha with walls or septa, separating individual cells.
Aseptate Hypha
Hypha with no walls or septa; a multinucleated cell (syncytium).
