Speech Context
The surroundings, circumstances, environment, background, or setting in which communication takes place that helps establish meaning and influences what is said and how it is said.
Types of Speech Context
Intrapersonal, interpersonal (dyad or small group), public, and mass communication.
Intrapersonal Communication
Communication focused on one person where the speaker is both the sender and receiver of the message; it involves talking to oneself.
Interpersonal Communication
Communication between one or a limited number of people that allows greater opportunity for feedback and clarification.
Dyad
Interpersonal communication between two people, where clarification, feedback, and expression of ideas are maximized.
Small Group Communication
Communication between three or more people, where clarification and feedback are reduced because the speaker must adjust to multiple participants.
Public Communication
Communication that enables a speaker to deliver an informative or persuasive message to a large audience using louder voice and broader gestures.
Mass Communication
Communication through television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, billboards, the internet, and other forms of media.
Speech Context
One of the elements of communication that refers to the situation or setting in which communication takes place and influences how people communicate with others.
