Greenwich Mean Time
The mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, used as a basis for standard time worldwide.
Prime Meridian
The meridian (0 degrees longitude) from which all other time zones are measured.
Time Zone
A region of the Earth that has the same standard time.
Daylight Savings Time
A practice of setting the clock forward by one hour during warmer months to extend evening daylight.
International Date Line (IDL)
An imaginary line located at approximately 180 degrees longitude, where the date changes as one crosses it.
Time Difference
The difference in hours between two time zones.
Eastern Time Zone
A time zone that is UTC-5 during standard time and UTC-4 during daylight saving time.
Daylight Savings Adjustment
The practice of setting clocks forward in the spring and back in the fall to make better use of daylight.
Squiggly Lines in Time Zones
Irregular borders in time zones to keep entire countries or regions within the same time zone.
Example of Time Conversion
When it is 10AM in London, it is 11AM in Rome, being 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
