The steps of the scientific method are to:
Ask a question (Problem)
Constructor hypothesis
Test your hypothesis by doing an experiment
analyze your data
Make a conclusion
Repeat the experiment
Observations
Are an important part of doing an experiment. When you observe, you become aware of something using one of your senses. Your five senses are smell, taste, slight, touch and sound. In an observation you simply describe something as it appears. An observation is A statement describing a fact.
Inferences
Are different than observations it should not be included when observing an experiment. When you infer, you make a mental judgment based on observations. Inferences cannot be directly observed. They require thought.
The metric system
It is a standard measurement system used by most scientists all over the world
Overview of the metric system
* The metric system is based on multiples of 10
The metric system is used to measure length, volume and mass
The meter is the basic unit of length
The Kilogram is the basic unit of mass
The leader is the basic unit of volume
What is used to measure length
the ruler or meter stick
There are 100 centimeters (cm) In one meter (m)
There are 10 millimeters (mm) in one centimeter (cm)
examples using picture
If you measure a line to be 34cm it can also be expressed as 340 MM
If you measure a line to be 1.2 METERS it can also be expressed as 120cm
What is volume
The amount of space an object takes up.
L x W x H Is the formula used to find the volume of a rectangle or square
cm3 Is the unit used to express the volume of a rectangular square
What is the granulated cylinder used for?
It is used to measure the volume of a liquid
ml Is the unit used to express the volume of a liquid
You read the granulated cylinder at the bottom of the meniscus, a curve shaped line that appears in a granulated cylinder
What is mass
How much matter is in an object
The triple beam balance is used to measure the mass of an object
grams (g) Are used to express the mass of an object
What is density
The measurement of how much matter is contained in a given volume
To determine density you need two things. The mass of Of an object and the volume of an object.
the formula for density is D=M/V
The units that are used to express density are g/cm3.
If you cut an object in half it does not change its density
The density of water is 1.0 g/cm 3
Use picture
The block in the picture has a density of 0.8 g/cm3. 80% of the block is below the water line and 20% is above it.
Any Object above 1.0 g/cm3 We'll sink in water
