Guidelines for maintaining airport facilities and infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient air operations.
Airport Maintenance Standards
A system that guides aircraft safely through the air and on the ground, preventing collisions and ensuring efficient traffic flow.
Air Traffic Control (ATC)
Air Operations
All activities related to flying, including preparation, flight execution, and post-flight procedures.
Apron
Designated area at an airport where aircraft are parked, loaded/unloaded, refueled, or maintained.
Terminal Apron
Adjacent to the passenger terminal, accommodating activities such as refueling, maintenance, catering, and passenger boarding/deplaning.
Remote Apron
Area where aircraft are secured or serviced for an extended period, or used for passenger loading/unloading via conveyance.
Hangar Apron
Positioned outside of a hangar and used to allow aircraft to move into and out of a hangar.
Constructed, hard surfaces that aircraft use for landing, takeoff, taxiing, and parking.
Pavement
Flexible Pavement
Pavement type that includes grass, dirt, and gravel; generally less expensive and faster to install but requires higher maintenance.
Concrete Pavement
Pavement type that is more rigid, poured into distinctive slabs, resists weathering and oil/fuel spillage.
Subgrade
The soil that forms the foundation of the pavement section.
Subbase
Used in areas where frost is severe or the subgrade soil is weak.
Base
Consists of different materials, either treated or untreated, forming a layer of the pavement structure.
Bituminous Surface
A hot-mix asphalt that prevents water penetration, provides a smooth, bonded, skid-resistant surface.
Mandatory Instruction Signs
Signs featuring white lettering on a red background that indicate taxiway/runway intersections.
Location Signs
Signs with yellow lettering on a black background that tell the pilot or vehicle operator the taxiway or runway upon which they are located.
Direction Signs
Signs with black lettering and a yellow background that indicate the direction of taxiways leading to an intersection.
Boundary Signs
Signs with black lettering and a yellow background used to identify boundaries of critical areas.
Taxiway Ending Marker
Signs that indicate a taxiway does not continue beyond an intersection.
Destination Signs
Signs that have a black lettering on a yellow background with an arrow and indicate the general direction to a remote location.
Information Signs
Signs installed on the airside of an airport that provide information other than mandatory holding positions or taxiway guidance; black inscription on a yellow background.
Vehicle Road Signs
Signs located on the airfield intended solely for vehicle operators.
Runway Distance Remaining Signs
Signs with a white numerical inscription on a black background, indicating the distance in thousands of feet of remaining runway.
Airport lighting
Consists of runway and taxiway lights and other lights on the ramp and in aircraft operations area, adhering to FAA standards.
Runway Centerline Lighting
Lighting required installed in the pavement for runways with a category 2 or 3 ILS approach.
Runway Edge Lighting Systems
Lighting that defines the edge of the runway with low, medium, or high intensity lights.
Threshold or Runway End Lights
Lights that emit a green light outward from the approach end (threshold) and a red light towards the runway end.
Taxiway edge lights
Lights that are blue in color and define the edges of taxiways.
Approach Lighting System
A lighting system installed at the approach end of a runway to aid pilots in visual alignment, especially in low visibility.
Airport Rotating beacon
Provides pilots the location of the airport at night and during periods of low visibility; alternates between white and green for civilian airports.
Wind cones
Provide the wind direction and velocity near the surface of the airport.
Obstruction Lights
Lights used to identify obstructions in and around the airport that represent a hazard to aircraft operations.
