What is static electricity?
An accumulation of charges on an object.
How is static electricity produced?
When poor conductors are rubbed together exchanging charges.
Difference between static and current electricity?
Static electricity does not move and Currents electricity moves.
What makes a neutral charge?
Same amount of protons and electrons.
Do opposite charges attract?
Yes
Three ways to build up charges on an object?
charging by friction, charging by contact, charging by induction.
Charging by friction
Two objects rub together and one becomes positively charged and the other becomes negatively charged.
Charging by contact
A charged object touching a neutral object to make it have the same charge.
Charging by induction no grounding
Temporary change, charges are attracted to different sides of an object. Each side with a different charge.
Charging by induction with grounding
Permanent change, electrons are attracted or repelled into or out of an object from the ground.
What is electric discharge?
When an object becomes neutral.
What is the electrostatic series?
Materials ranked based on their ability to gain and lose electrons.
What are conductors?
Materials in which electrons move freely.
What are insulators?
Materials in which electrons don't move freely.
Can electrons move from atom to atom?
Only in conductors.
