The skull consists of two main parts, what are these parts?
The neurocranium and the viscerocranium
What does each main part of the skull do?
neurocranium - keeps and protects the brain and sensory organs - ears and eyes
Viscerocranium - surrounds the upper part of the respiratory and digestive tract
The neurocranium is futher divided into two main parts, what are these parts?
The Calvaria (or cranial vault) - upper part of the neurocranium, covers the cranial cavity containing the brain
The cranial base
There are three main sutures of the calvaria name them and state where they are
Sagittal suture - between the paired parietal bones
Coronal suture - between the frontal and parietal bones
Lambdoid suture - between the parietal and occipital bones
how many bones make up the neurocranium and what are they?
The occipital bone - unpaired
The parietal bones - paired
The frontal bone - unpaired
Ethmoid bone - unpaired
Sphenoid bone - unpaired
Temporal bones - paired
The viscerocranium consists of many bones that form the facial skeleton, how many bones and name them
14 bones
Mandible - unpaired
Maxilla (maxilae) - paired
Palatine - paired
Nasal - paired
Zygomatic - paired
Lacrimal - paired
Inferior nasal concha - paired
Vomer - unpaired

Label the anterior cranial fossa

Label the parts of the middle cranial fossa

Label the parts of the posterior cranial fossa

The jaws are the teeth bearing bones, they consist of 3 bones what are the bones?
The mandible - unpaired bone forming the lower jaw
Maxillary bones - paired, forming the upper part of the jaw
Which bone of the viscerocranium forms the major part? (About 25%)
The jaws
What type of bone is the maxillae?
An irregular shaped bone
What does the maxillae support?
The superior teeth
What structures does the maxillae form?
The nasal cavity, orbital cavity, hard palate
What does the maxillae contain?
Maxillary sinus
The maxillae forms the skeleton of which facial feature?
The anterior cheek
