homeostasis
The dynamic maintenance of a stable, relatively constant internal environment within narrow physiological limits
homeostatic mechanisms
Self-regulating control systems (composed of receptors, a control center, and effectors) that work together to maintain homeostasis

Sensors that monitor the internal or external environment, detect specific changes (stimuli), and send signals to a control center

The integration center (typically the brain) that evaluates incoming sensory data, compares it against a set point, and determines the response

Organs, muscles, or glands that execute the physiological responses directed by the control center to counteract or reinforce a stimulus

The primary regulatory mechanism of homeostasis, where the response opposes or reverses the direction of the initial change to return conditions toward normal

Thin, double-layered, fluid-secreting membranes that line closed thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities and cover their internal organs
pleural membranes
The serous membranes associated with the lungs; parietal pleura lines the chest wall, and visceral pleura adheres directly to the lungs
pericardial membranes
The serous membranes that surround the heart; parietal pericardium lines the outer sac, and visceral pericardium covers the heart muscle
peritoneal membranes
The serous membranes of the abdominopelvic cavity; parietal peritoneum lines the cavity wall, and visceral peritoneum covers the abdominal organs
