Hazard symbol
A symbol used on a chemical to warn of danger.
Acid
A solution with a pH less than 7.
Base
An insoluble alkali, with a pH more than 7.
Alkali
A solution with a pH more than 7.
Indicator
A chemical that can change colour to show whether a substance is an acid, neutral or an alkali.
Neutralisation
The reaction between an alkali and an acid. Also refers to the process of using alkalis to neutralise the effects of acid, for example in indigestion remedies.
Limewater
The chemical used to test for the presence of carbon dioxide - limewater turns from colourless to cloudy
Melting
The process during which a solid changes into a liquid.
Boiling/Evaporation
The process during which a liquid changes into a gas.
Freezing
The process during which a liquid changes into a solid.
Condensing
The process during which a gas turns into a liquid.
Sublimation
The process during which gases change directly into solids or solids change directly into gases.
