Meiosis I
- creates 2 haploid daughter cells
- daughter cells have only half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell

Prophase I
- The nuclear envelope breaks down
- Chromosomes condense
- crossing over occurs here

Metaphase I
- Homologous chromosomes line up at the center of the cell (independent assortment)
- "Middle"

Anaphase I
- Homologous chromosomes separate
- Move to opposite poles of the cell
- "Apart"

Telophase I
- Chromosomes gather at the poles

Cytokinesis I
- cytoplasm divides

Meiosis II
- sister chromatids in the two daughter cells separate
- each dividing cell has only one set of homologous chromosomes
- no DNA is replicated
- creates 4 haploid daughter cells

Prophase II
- chromosomes condense
- a new Spindle forms
- nuclear envelope breaks down

Metaphase II
- chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
- at the equator

Anaphase II
- sister chromatids separate and move to opposite sides of the cell
- centromeres divide

Telophase II
- A nuclear envelope forms around each set of chromosomes

Cytokinesis II
- the cells divide into 4 haploid cells
