First Battle of Tarain

A battle fought in 1191 CE where Prithviraj Chauhan, the Rajput ruler of Delhi and Ajmer, inflicted a crushing defeat on Muhammad Ghori.

Second Battle of Tarain

A battle fought in 1192 CE in which Muhammad Ghori routed the Rajput army after Raja Jaichandra of Kanauj refused to help Prithviraj Chauhan.

Muhammad bin Bakhtiar Khilji

A general of Muhammad Ghori who swept across Bihar, overthrew the Sena dynasty of Bengal, and destroyed many Buddhist monasteries and libraries.

Delhi Sultanate

The period between 1206-1526 CE in Indian history during which rulers known as sultans governed from their capital city of Delhi.

Mamluk Dynasty

Also known as the Slave dynasty, a ruling dynasty founded by Qutbuddin Aibak, a former slave of Muhammad Ghori who rose to general by merit.

Lakhbaksh

A title meaning 'giver of lakhs' given to Qutbuddin Aibak by court historians because he was a generous ruler who looked after the welfare of his subjects.

Qutb Minar

A famous monument in India started by Qutbuddin Aibak, completed by Iltutmish, with its fifth and last storey added by Firoz Shah Tughlaq.

Iltutmish

The son-in-law and successor of Qutbuddin Aibak who ruled from 1210-36 CE, consolidated Sultanate possessions, and brought north India up to the Narmada river under control.

Chenghiz Khan

The Mongol chief who reached the borders of India while pursuing the Shah of Persia; Iltutmish saved India from his invasion by refusing shelter to the Shah.
