RADAR
Acronym for RAdio Detection And Ranging; an operational system using electromagnetic waves traveling at the speed of light (300,000km/s) to detect targets and measure their precise distance.
The Echo Principle
The fundamental physical principle where radar detects distant targets by transmitting radio frequency (RF) energy pulses and measuring returning reflected echoes.
Transmitter
Core hardware component (analogized as "The Voice") that generates high-power bursts of radio frequency (RF) energy pulses to illuminate distant targets.
Antenna
Core hardware component (analogized as "The Eye") that focuses RF energy into narrow directional beams and captures weak target echo reflections.
Receiver
Core hardware component (analogized as "The Ear") that listens for weak returning echoes from distant targets and amplifies them millions of times for signal processing.
Duplexer
High-speed hardware switch (analogized as "The Switch") that time-shares a single antenna between transmission and reception to protect sensitive receiver electronics.
Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF)
The number of radio frequency energy pulses emitted by a radar transmitter per second.
Pulse Repetition Interval (PRI)
The total time interval measured from the start of one transmitted pulse to the start of the next pulse, mostly spent in silence listening for echoes.
Inverse Fourth-Power Law
Physical law stating that target echo power decays inversely with distance raised to the fourth power, requiring a 16-fold increase in transmitter power to double detection range.
Pulse Delay Benchmark
The standard round-trip pulse travel delay benchmark of 12.4 microseconds per 1 NM of target distance.
Radar Cross Section (RCS)
A measurement of target reflectivity expressed in m2, determined by geometric shape and surface material composition rather than physical size alone.
Azimuth
The horizontal target position measured in degrees relative to the aircraft nose or true North.
Elevation
The vertical target position measured in degrees above or below the horizontal plane of the aircraft.
Doppler Effect
The frequency shift in returning radar waves caused by relative motion (range rate or closing speed) between the radar platform and the target.
Moving Target Indication (MTI)
A Doppler filtering technology that strips out zero-Doppler ground returns to isolate moving target signals, enabling look-down and shoot-down capabilities.
Track-While-Scan (TWS)
Air-to-air radar mode that maintains continuous tracking files on multiple targets simultaneously while sweeping the broad volume search frame.
Single-Target Track (STT)
Tactical tracking mode where the radar halts search scanning and locks a continuous beam onto a single target to deliver high-precision fire control data.
Windshear Warning System
Airborne pulse-Doppler weather radar feature that detects microbursts by measuring horizontal raindrop velocity changes, providing up to 10 seconds (5 miles) advance warning.
Terrain Following (TF)
Low-altitude flight guidance mode that vertically sweeps a pencil beam ahead of the aircraft to map terrain profiles and generate automatic vertical steering commands.
Terrain Avoidance (TA)
Low-altitude flight navigation mode alternating vertical and horizontal beam sweeps to allow pilots to maneuver around land formations and obstacles.
Side-Looking Airborne Radar (SLAR)
Remote sensing mapping technique employing long linear array antennas to produce real-beam strip maps along both sides of an aircraft flight path.
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)
Ground mapping technique synthesizing a long effective antenna aperture via forward aircraft movement to maintain uniform high resolution (∼1 ft) at long range.
Interferometric 3-D SAR
Mapping technique using multiple vertical baseline receiving channels to measure phase differences and model 3D surface elevations.
Real-Beam Monopulse Mapping
Forward-aspect mapping mode scanning with a narrow monopulse beam to overcome SAR forward-aspect limits for autonomous approaches to unimproved landing strips.
Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C)
Strategic surveillance platforms (e.g., E-2C Hawkeye, E-3 AWACS) operating rotodomes at lower frequencies (UHF/S-band) to provide 360∘ coverage up to 200–400 nmi.
Joint STARS (E-8)
Air-to-ground battle management aircraft using a 24-foot side-looking electronically steered array combining GMTI and SAR to oversee ground operations.
Non-Cooperative Target Identification (NCTI)
Air-to-air technique identifying aircraft beyond visual range using jet-engine modulation signatures, 1-D range profiles, or 2-D ISAR target images.
Command-Inertial Guidance (AMRAAM)
Missile guidance method where the weapon receives mid-course target updates via host radar sidelobes before activating its internal active seeker for terminal intercept.
Semi-Active Homing (Sparrow)
Missile targeting method requiring continuous target illumination from the host fighter radar in Single-Target Track mode throughout the missile flight time.
Low-Observable SAR Strike Workflow
Four-stage precision targeting process consisting of Stand-Off Approach, Wide-Area SAR Sweep & Freeze, Precision Designation patch mapping, and Weapon Hand-Off & Release.
