how were rich people buried?

• grand tombs with great decorations

• located near busy roads entering the city (so people would see it more)

• bigger tomb = more rich

how would poor people pay for their funerals?

would join a funeral clubs where members would pay monthly and socialise (to make connections + get people to come to their funeral)

what are some similarities Greeks and Romans had of preparing the dead (3)

• body is washed and perfumed

• coin placed in mouth for the ferryman

• women would lament

what are some differences Romans had of preparing the dead (3)

• Just as someone dies a relative will kiss them as they take their last breath, or call out their name after they die

• Instead of being dressed in a white shroud, they would be in their finest clothes

• Atrium (mourning time) is 8 days long (ew stinky corpse), the Greeks is only 3

who would attend the funeral?

• there would be musicians (flute + horn)

• family members (wearing funeral masks of family ancestors)

• slaves/freedman

• actors (who would dress up as the dead person)

how would they commemorate the dead?

• a marble bust was made for their house

• the Romans believed that they turned into Manes (spirits from the underworld)

why did Romans believe burial was important

thought the dead couldn’t be at rest until they’re buried and at peace

where did the Romans bury their dead and why?
