Reading levels
The degree of difficulty or ease of a student reading a particular passage
Formative assessment
Feedback from activity is used to adapt and inform instruction
Summative assessment
Assessment of learning at a given point
Metacognition
Knowledge of one's own thought processes while reading
Universal Screener
A criterion-referenced assessment of targeted reading skills; typically given to all students three times during the school year
MTSS
A three-tiered approach to instruction or behavior; scaffolding learning for those who need additional support
Norm-referenced
Score is compared to other test-takers
Criterion-referenced
Objective is to see what a student has mastered
Formal assessment
Standardized test given under controlled conditions so that groups can be compared
Informal assessment
Assessments which record observations using anecdotal records, checklists, rubrics, portfolios, etc.
Percentile rank
Each student's position within a group (1-99)
Stanine
A way to report test scores; based on a standard of nine
Standardized assessment
Any form of test that requires all test takers to answer the same questions or a selection of questions from a common bank of questions, that is scored in a standard or consistent manner
Validity
The assessment measures what it is supposed to measure
Reliability
Consistency of scores
Zone of Proximal Development
Vygotsky's theory describing the distance between the child's actual development and the level of potential development under guidance
Constructivist Theory
Piaget's theory that through accommodation and assimilation, students can build on their own prior knowledge
Hierarchy of Human Needs
Maslow's theory proposing that all humans have basic needs that must be satisfied before other needs higher in the hierarchy can be addressed
Critical Literacy Theory
A learning approach where students are expected to examine various texts to understand the relationship between language and the power it can hold in society
Matthew Effect
From "the rich get rich and the poor get poorer", the reading notion based on the idea that children who come to school already with a deficit will need more intervention
Assessment
The act of discovering the literacy strengths and weaknesses of a student
Intervention
Procedures to alleviate or remedy weaknesses or problems
Interest Inventory
A tool to gather information regarding a child's interests
Qualitative data
Data derived from looking at the quality of a student's work, including observations, samples, etc.
Quantitative data
Information gained from looking at the number of correct responses; often based on formal assessments
