Chronic Sick - Category “A”
A Uniformed Member of the Service who reports sick for any reason, except an initial line of duty absence, or for hospitalization at any time, 4 or more times within a 12-month period.
Administrative Sick
Sick leave that is NOT authorized for injuries, Line of Duty injuries, Chronic Absent - Category B, dental problems, stress-related or psychological conditions, or major illnesses.
Counseling Services Unit
A unit that assists Members of the Service who are experiencing difficulties with alcohol, prescription medication, gambling, or finances.
Schedule A Command Discipline
Non-judicial discipline for minor violations (e.g., improper uniform) with a maximum penalty of forfeiture of up to 5 days vacation or accrued time.
Schedule B Command Discipline
Non-judicial punishment for violations including loss of shield, failure to safeguard prisoner, or loss of Activity Log, with a maximum penalty of forfeiture of up to 10 days vacation or accrued time.
Schedule C Command Discipline
A disciplinary track adjudicated by the Department Advocate in lieu of Charges and Specifications, carrying a penalty of up to 20 days.
SPAR DANO+++
A mnemonic for Schedule B violations: Shield (loss of), Prisoner (failure to safeguard), Alcohol (in facility), Radio (failure to acknowledge), Department Property (loss), Activity Log (loss), Name and shield (failure to give), and Other (FADO, unauthorized radio use, etc.).
ASPOT
Mnemonic for mandatory suspension based on four refusals: Answer questions (Talk), Submit to drug screening, Perform assigned duties, Obey a lawful order (plus AWOL and interest/association violations).
IC CUP +
Mnemonic for when a Captain or above MAY suspend or modify: Indicted, Charged with offense, Charges And Specifications served, Unfit for duty, Patronizes unlicensed premises, or participated in serious misconduct.
Designated Off-Limits Location
A location operating legitimately that is placed off-limits by a CO due to police misconduct-related activity; MOS are prohibited from entering within their command of assignment on or off duty.
Unlawful Locations
Premises involved in illegal activities (gambling, drugs, etc.) where a Member of the Service must be suspended or modified for associating with or patronizing, applying to all MOS citywide, on or off duty.
Cooping Prone Locations
Locations where Members of the Service may engage in unauthorized interrupted patrol; designated based on past history or CO's judgment and applies only to on-duty members.
Familial Relationship (Recusal)
A relationship (spouse, sibling, parent, cousin, etc.) that requires mandatory recusal from a Department investigation or disciplinary proceeding.
Personal Relationship (Recusal)
A close connection (friend, neighbor, close colleague) likely to induce partiality; recusal is determined on an individual basis.
Appearance Control Unit (ACU)
The office where a Uniformed Member of the Service must report and submit their ID card when required to appear in court, before a Grand Jury, or other government agencies.
Notice of Claim
A document required before starting a tort action against the City of New York; it must be referred to the Office of the Comptroller and not accepted by Department members.
Short Date Notification
A court appearance notification for the next day, or a Friday notification for the following Monday, sent via email to the MOS and command leadership through the CPR System.
Intoxication
Unfitness for duty due to the influence of alcohol, narcotics, or other drugs, or circumstances indicating a member may have been intoxicated during an earlier period related to an incident.
Official Letterhead
Used by a ranking officer conducting a civilian complaint investigation to advise the complainant of the receipt of their complaint.
Agreement to Accept Service of Notice
A waiver a suspended member may request to avoid reporting to their resident precinct on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, requiring prior approval from the Department Advocate's Office.
