Health and Wellbeing
Relates to the state of a person’s physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual existence and how they feel about their lives in relation to the various dimensions
Physical Health and Wellbeing
The functioning of the body and its systems, including the body's capacity to perform daily tasks and activities
Mental Health and Wellbeing
Refers to the state of a person’s mind or brain and relates to the ability to think and process information. Optimal state enables an individual to positively form opinions, make decisions and use logic.
Emotional Health and Wellbeing
Defined as the ability to recognise, understand and effectively manage and express emotions as well as the ability to display resilience
Resilience
The ability to effectively deal with adverse or negative events and the associated emotions that occur throughout life
Social Health and Wellbeing
Concerned with the ability to form meaningful and satisfying relationships with others as well as the ability to manage or adapt appropriately to different social situations.
Spiritual Health and Wellbeing
Refers to the ideas, beliefs, values and ethics that an individual posses, contributing to a sense of meaning, purpose and belonging.
Optimal Health and Wellbeing
Involves an individual experiencing the highest possible level of health and wellbeing when taking their unique experiences, characteristics and lifestyle into account.
WHO (1946) Definition of Health
A state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Wellbeing
Related to health and is connected to how an individual assesses the quality of their life. The state of being healthy, happy and contented, usually determined through self-assessment.
Characteristics of Emotional Health and Wellbeing
Recognise and understand a range of emotions, Effectively manage and express emotions, Display resilience, High levels of resilience
Characteristics of Social Health and Wellbeing
Supportive network of friends, Effective communication with others, Ability to manage and adapt appropriately to different social situations, Feeling of belonging, value and purpose in the community
Characteristics of Spiritual Health and Wellbeing
Sense of belonging, Having meaning and purpose in life, Experiencing peace and harmony, Acting according to values and beliefs
Characteristics of Physical Health and Wellbeing
Adequate energy levels, Appropriate fitness levels, Ability to complete daily tasks, Healthy body weight, Strong immune system, Freedom from illness/disease/injury

Low levels of stress and anxiety, Positive self-esteem, Confidence, Optimism
